Trafficway closing for cycling race

May 12, 2006

The South Lawrence Trafficway will be closed this morning for the USA Cycling National Collegiate Road Championships bicycle race in the Lawrence area.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will block off the trafficway, which also is Kansas Highway 10, from 8:30 a.m. until around noon, when the race ends, from the Lecompton interchange on Interstate 70 west of Lawrence to the trafficway's junction with U.S. Highway 59 south of the city.

Road signs will designate U.S. 59, or Iowa Street, through Lawrence as the detour that morning. During the race, patrol officers will help residents who use the trafficway as the only access to their property.

Eastbound I-70 traffic can exit at the Lecompton ramp during the race, but drivers will only be allowed to drive to the north.

Exactly! Where the Fv(% is the trafficway? 23rd St? Are they going to have salamander guards? The "trafficway" should be THE bike lane for all of Lawrence.

The bike activity is great. Thus far six of the cyclist I've conversed with are very nice people. They are shopping grocery stores, eating establishments and no doubt bike shops. The motels and night spots are likely doing well.

Frankly I would rather see Lawrence become a world famous cycling mecca instead of a failed shopping mecca. The more cyclists the merrier.

The "trafficway" should ONE OF THE MAJOR bike lanes for Lawrence. Yep I'll support that idea.

Biking is great fun, I really like the crowd too, but Lawrence really needs propper bike trails or routes, not redone roads to be shared with cars.
