Suspect arrested in downtown stabbing

Police have arrested a 34-year-old Lawrence man for a stabbing Saturday night in downtown Lawrence.

Jerry Allen Brown was booked into the Douglas County Jail late Wednesday after police identified him as a suspect and found him at Burcham Park.

He’s accused of stabbing a 21-year-old man about 10 p.m. Saturday near 10th and Kentucky streets.

The victim told police he was in a vehicle with an acquaintance when someone he didn’t know – later identified as Brown – approached the vehicle. Brown asked where he could get “some items,” according to a report, but police wouldn’t say exactly what he was seeking. When the victim said he couldn’t get the items, a fight ensued, according to the police report.

Passers-by found the victim injured at 11th and Massachusetts streets, and he was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Both the victim and Brown are transients without a permanent address, according to police and jail reports.

Brown has not been formally charged but is expected to make a first appearance today.
