KU softball wins pair at Big 12 tournament

? Like it has all season, Kansas University’s softball squad rode stellar pitching Thursday to a pair of victories at the Big 12 Conference tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

First, KU clipped third-seeded Baylor, 4-0, behind starter Serena Settlemier and relief work from Kassie Humphreys. Then, hours later, Humphreys and KU shut down No. 7-seeded Missouri, 2-0, to advance to today’s semifinals.

Against Baylor, Settlemier and Stevie Crisosto homered to fuel the Jayhawks. Settlemier’s home run was her 22nd and tied the Big 12 season record set by Ali Viola of Nebraska in 1998.

Freshman center fielder Crisosto, who also doubled, smacked only her third round-tripper of the year and her first in the last 17 games.

Settlemier, who had been named Big 12 player of the year on Wednesday, also pitched five solid innings for her 17th win. Humphreys hurled the last two frames for her fourth save.

“I thought Kansas came ready to play,” Baylor coach Gene Moore said. “They looked like a team on a mission.”

In KU’s nightcap, Humphreys (15-16) threw a one-hitter. and the Jayhawks got an RBI double from Settlemier in their fifth straight victory.

KU (32-24) will play either Nebraska or Baylor at 4:30 p.m. today. The game will be televised on FSN (Sunflower Broadband Channel 36).
