Children can get free bike helmets at fair

May 12, 2006

Children will have a chance to receive a free bike helmet and show off their bike-riding skills this weekend in Lawrence.

The city's annual Helmet Fair will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Haskell Indian Nations University. City staff members and volunteers will be fitting children with free bike helmets at the event, in addition to sponsoring a bike rodeo and offering safety advice.

Children who are unable to attend may be fitted for a helmet at any Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical station throughout the year.

Free? How are they free? Is that free like a Geico insurance quote or free like the taxpayers of Douglas County are paying for other kids helmets?

The taxpayers are not paying for the helmets. According to an article from earlier in the week, and from I have been told, area businesses help underwrite the purchase of the helmets, which are sold to the fire department at cost. There also may be a grant involved. It's been a few years since I have asked.
I personally don't care if a few of my tax dollars are used, if a kid wears a helmet.

The fire department has been giving free bike helmets for years.

You used to be able to stop at a fire station, and get a free helmet, which they would fit for you, too.

Anybody know what part of Haskell this will be held at? I'm guessing the parking lot by the stadium?

erichaar is just jealous that he/she already paid for his/her kids' helmets and doesn't get the free ones. Come on! What's wrong with helping save the lives of some kids? I can think of worse ways to spend the money.

And you still can go to any fire department to get a free helmet, fitted to you. Cool.
