Police have arrested a 34-year-old Lawrence man in connection with a downtown stabbing during the weekend.

Late Wednesday night, Jerry Allen Brown was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder after police found him at Burcham Park. He's accused of stabbing a 21-year-old man about 10 p.m. Saturday on Kentucky Street.

The victim told police he was in a vehicle with an acquaintance when someone he didn't know later identified as Brown approached the vehicle. Brown asked where he could get "some items," according to a report, but police wouldn't say exactly what he was seeking. When the victim said he couldn't get the items, a fight ensued, according to the police report.

Passersby found the victim injured at 11th and Massachusetts streets, and he was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Both the victim and Brown are transients without a permanent address, according to police and jail reports.

I wonder why the "acquaintance" in the vehicle didn't take the victim to the hospital?

"Items," huh? Is that what the kids on the street are calling it these days?

my guess is that the "acquaintance" was "servicing" his needs

Nice. 10pm on a Saturday night near downtown. When are we going to really do something about the homeless population in this town? These are not the same local wino's that were around in the 80's. We're enabling and even encouraging this behavior. Do we have to wait through another several years of ineffective task forces and escalation before we get tough with these people? Maybe next time it will be a college coed who ends up raped and murdered. Will somebody do something then? Enough is enough.

Perhaps they weren't welcome in Topeka. Let's make sure they understand that they are not welcome here either.

The guy probably just moved here from Topeka and hasn't been told yet that knifeing people isn't allowed in Lawrence like it is in Topeka.

What other crimes have to happen before the City Commission will shut down the "wet" shelter? Do we really need a muder for them to wake up? Why are we enabling the homeless criminals? Why are we not taking care of the mentally ill? Why why why are our city leaders spineless? Hey Loring, are you taking responsibility for this one, or are you going to be your same old lame self again? THIS CAN NOT GO ON FOLKS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

BK,what is this "our" downtown you speak of? Perhaps it is "their" downtown and they are just allowing you to visit? You should be thanking them.

Jerry was born and raised here, the Lawrence school district took him out of the special needs class when he went to high school and his life has been down hill ever since. He is mentally incapable of living in our world. Why is the government using law enfocement to handle the mentally ill. Why not give Jerry the professional help he really should have. Douglas County law enforcement sent him to stormont vail but Stormont only let him stay there for a week. This is an illness you can not get over in a week. Then Stormont let him go back to the streets. Why didn't they help him then, that was before the stabbing incident, if they had truely diagnosed him correctly then and treated him properly the stabbing would have never happened. God help us all.
