20-year-old charged in house-party brawl

A Lawrence man was charged Wednesday for his role in a house-party brawl that police say involved a baseball bat and flashlight being used as weapons.

Ryan C. Paulson, 20, Lawrence, was booked into jail early Wednesday and charged in Douglas County District Court with aggravated assault, battery and criminal trespassing.

Police said a group of men were having a house party Saturday night in the 1600 block of West 21st Street when some uninvited guests, including Paulson, showed up and were asked to leave. About 2 a.m., Paulson and two other men returned to the home armed with a baseball bat and a flashlight and used them to attack a group of people at the party, according to a report and a description by one of the victims.

A 19-year-old Kansas University student who lives at the home said he was struck in the head during the fight and received eight staples in his head. A friend of his received nine staples in his head.

Police are still investigating.
