Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 7, 1906: “Burglars broke into five businesses in Baldwin last night. Principal damage was at the Hobbs Mercantile Co. where important items of clothing were taken and the place was ransacked. No arrests have been made although some think they know who was behind it all. : Seven high school juniors who had been suspended for scrapping have been reinstated by Prof. Olney. The boys were suspended because in a burst of junior class enthusiasm they lowered the colors placed by the seniors upon the flag staff of the building. Seniors retaliated by hanging the three lower classes in effigy and some scuffles developed. Apparently no serious harm resulted although the school tried to hush up any reports on the matter. : There seems to be growing pressure for permission to play Sunday baseball games here. Many resent Sunday action of that type but it seems to be coming.”
