Terminology

To the editor:

On the front of the D section of the April 27 Journal-World there is a picture of Gary Lawson carrying a walking plow. The caption says he’s carrying a “walk-behind hoe.” If he was carrying a hoe, he wouldn’t have to struggle with it because it would weigh about three or four pounds. Most people have never operated a walking plow. You tie the reins together and put your head and one arm through the reins and steer one rein or the other while guiding the plow through the ground.

Another gripe that I have is when referring to bolts, nuts, rivets or anything that is used to hold parts of anything together, these city guys want to list them all as “fasteners.” If I worked in a hardware store and someone came in and said he needed a fastener, I would keep a jar of diaper or safety pins and ask him how many he needed. I think those fastener people are fresh out of somewhere east of the Mississippi.
