President to sign bill legalizing drugs

— President Vicente Fox within days will sign legislation that allows the personal use of cocaine, LSD, heroin and other drugs, his spokesman confirmed Tuesday, despite heavy criticism from the United States and within Mexico that the law will invite more problems than it intends to solve.

Supporters of the law say the concerns are overblown. The proposed law would allow people to possess small amounts of drugs for personal use, freeing authorities to turn their attention from small-time drug users to large drug traffickers.

The law would be among the most permissive in the world. Under it, people could possess 5 grams of opium, 25 milligrams of heroin, 500 milligrams of cocaine, 100 milligrams of amphetamines, 200 milligrams of methamphetamines, 0.015 milligrams of LSD and 5 grams of marijuana without facing legal sanction.

Here's a thought--

Deport all the druggies, meth heads, crack heads et al. to Mexico; maybe the total can help offset the "illiegal" immigrants into "our" country. That'd free up prison space for sure!

We should advertize this to all the illegal mexicans. This might help in getting rid of the problem.

More traffic if people thought it was the US.

"Okay, here's a question, why didn't the headline specify that it was the Mexican president doing this?"

Wishful thinking?

Kinda like hoping the dopers and druggies will start sneaking south across the border. Only problem with that dream is they've burnt out their drive and motivation already.

More than likely this will end up with flippin warehouses of this garbage right on the border. But then again, man's desire to destroy himself can't be limited by things like clear thinking and common sense.

That makes Mexico a prized destination for spring break.

Maybe their economy will start doing better with even more drug money coming in that people will jump the border back home.

Suddenly, Acapulco and Cancun are North America's answer to Amsterdam?

This could actually be a pretty good thing for Mexico, if it does what it's supposed to do (frees up law enforcement to work on the large-scale operations and the, well, ya know, killin people and stuff).

This will be interesting to watch, and could potentially (if it doesn't just blow up) support personal use decriminalization efforts in the US.
