From the Lawrence Daily World for May 3, 1906: "The old Republican machine seems in control in Topeka and it will be difficult for Democrats to edge into the scene. : Nine pupils were suspended from the high school this week and the principal, Olney, is trying to get the matter hushed up and prevent any publication of details. Olney says if there is no printing of details, the matter can be hushed up. We often run into conflicts such as this but we cannot ignore facts and the facts are nine were suspended and there should be an explanation. We cannot make such news, we can only print it."
