KU hopes Shockers today beginning of good ending

Finish strong. That’s the mantra of Kansas University’s softball team.

Last spring, KU earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament by compiling a 31-24 record, a mark the Jayhawks can match if they sweep this week.

Kansas will play host to Wichita State in a 3 p.m. twinbill today at Arrocha Ballpark, then close the regular season at home this weekend against Iowa State.

Based on past performances, playing at Arrocha should provide a boost for the Jayhawks, who have compiled a 12-4 record at home, a 9-10 mark at neutral sites and a 6-10 record on the road.

In its 16 Big 12 Conference games, the Jayhawks (6-10) are 5-3 at Arrocha, but only 1-7 on the road. KU has scored only seven runs in those eight league road games.

KU’s pitching tandem of Serena Settlemier and Kassie Humphreys remains among the league’s best.

Settlemier has a 15-6 record with a 1.27 earned-run average, second best in the Big 12 behind Texas ace Cat Osterman. Humphreys has the third-lowest ERA in the league at 1.38, but her record is a deceptive 12-16.

Settlemier also continues to lead the Big 12 in home runs (20), RBIs (57) and slugging percentage (.826).

Settlemier is also the Jayhawks’ leading hitter with a .340 average. Second baseman Jessica Moppin and shortstop Destiny Frankenstein are hitting .301 and .290, but the team batting average of .237 is the ninth lowest in the 10-team league.
