Pension fund hires KU alumni chairman

David Wescoe, chairman of the Kansas University Alumni Association, is taking over management of the city of San Diego’s embattled $4 billion pension fund.

Wescoe, son of former KU Chancellor W. Clarke Wescoe, started Monday as investment manager of the fund, which has 19,000 members from the city and its port district and airport authority. The system has a $1.43 billion deficit, and its former administrator, Lawrence Grissom, is among four other former pension officials to be indicted on wire fraud and conspiracy charges connected with the fund’s management.

Wescoe was selected from among more than 200 applicants. He earns $200,000 annually as part of his five-year contract, with a five-year renewal option.

Wescoe is executive director of Messner & Smith, a San Diego investment firm, and has 27 years of experience in the financial and legal fields.
