Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 30, 1906: “Ohio is having its spring floods and it is hoped our Kaw River will not hear about it. It’s time to watch out for cyclones and heavy rain. : The district Democrats are to meet here late in the summer and the best advice is that they do a good job of getting ready for as of now, nobody seems interested in running for anything. : If a big coal strike occurs, many local operations like the brick plant could be idled for some time. Forty or 50 could be out of employment here. : Douglas County increasingly is getting a reputation for being a great place to get good horses since so many people here are raising fine animals. : The greatest gas well fire the world has ever known became a matter of history yesterday afternoon when the roaring spot near Caney was finally capped. A hood was finally put in place and there was great rejoicing over a great victory. The fire burned 34 days with a loss of more than half a million dollars in gas and equipment.”
