Graffanino wastes no time, belts slam

Newly acquired infielder connects off Mariners' Moyer in Royals' 10-all deadlock

? Kansas City’s Tony Graffanino, claimed off waivers from Boston on Tuesday, hit a grand slam Wednesday in the Royals’ 10-10 tie with the Seattle Mariners.

Roberto Petagine bolstered his chances of making the Mariners’ opening-day roster, hitting a two-run, ninth-inning home run.

Petagine’s one-out homer off Jimmy Gobble highlighted a three-run ninth that completed Seattle’s comeback from an 8-0 deficit

Jamie Moyer, scheduled to start Seattle’s opener Monday against the Angels, allowed eight runs, eight hits and two wild pitches in five innings.

Angel Berroa hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Graffanino blasted his grand slam in the second.

The 43-year-old Moyer doesn’t yet feel ready for his 20th major-league season.

“It should be around late April when I start to feel comfortable,” Moyer said.

Kansas City's Tony Graffanino, left, accepts congratulations from teammate David DeJesus after hitting a grand slam off Seattle's Jamie Moyer. The teams tied, 10-all, Wednesday in Peoria, Ariz.

Petagine, signed to a minor-league contract, is batting .429 (18-for-42) with two homers and 10 RBIs in 22 spring training games after arriving as a non-roster free agent on Feb. 21. Earlier Wednesday, the Mariners sent former starter Mike Morse to Triple-A Tacoma and fellow utility candidate Greg Dobbs to their minor league camp.

“One more day here, and we’ll see what’s happens,” Petagine said. “You can only control what you do, and just work hard every day. The rest is up to others.”

Raul Ibanez and Richie Sexson homered for Seattle.

Notes: Joe Borchard, getting an audition to make the Mariners’ roster while CF Jeremy Reed rests a sprained wrist, homered onto a grass hill in the fifth. Manager Mike Hargrove, who has said the newly acquired Borchard needed to work on his hitting, said had the ball been hit at Seattle’s Safeco Field “it would have gone into Puget Sound.” … Scott Elarton, making his final start before pitching the Royals’ opener against Detroit on Monday, allowed seven runs and 11 hits in five innings. … Kevin Appier did what he would not do a year ago – accept a minor-league assignment. The Mariners sent the 38-year-old former All-Star pitcher and World Series winner to their minor-league camp. Appier hasn’t pitched in the major leagues in 23 months because of elbow trouble.
