Arrocha repaired, ready for softball again

Damage at Arrocha Ballpark has been repaired. Now if the weather just will cooperate.

Kansas University’s softball team is scheduled to entertain Creighton University in a twinbill at 2 p.m. today, but the forecast is for thunderstorms.

“We’ll reschedule if we have to,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “If they come, we’ll try to play at least one.”

Creighton softballers were scheduled to leave their campus in Omaha, Neb., at 8 a.m. today for the bus ride to Lawrence.

Today’s doubleheader is the first home date for the Jayhawks since the March 12 windstorm blew bleachers onto the field and knocked over half the backstop.

Since then, the three steel standards that toppled have been reset into concrete and the wire mesh re-hung. A handful of patches in the screen are the only evidence of the microburst that struck parts of the campus on that Sunday morning.

“We’re fortunate to be up and running this quickly,” Bunge said.

Arrocha Ballpark had three sets of bleachers before the big wind hit. The set behind home plate wasn’t damaged, but the stands on the first- and third-base sides crumpled on impact and were totaled.

The third-base bleachers have been replaced by a section of seating salvaged from the adjacent Jayhawk Soccer Complex, which also suffered severe grandstand damage. The destroyed seats on the first-base side have been replaced by a small set of portable bleachers.

A larger set of bleachers has been ordered, but probably won’t arrive until after the season, Bunge said.

“There won’t be as many seats as we’ve had,” she said, “but I’m sure the fans will understand.”

The Jayhawks (17-16) have played 33 games, but only five have been at Arrocha. KU has played its last eight on the road, including 8-0 and 19-0 wallopings of UMKC Tuesday night. Those blowouts came on the heels of back-to-back seventh-inning walk-off losses to Texas A&M last weekend.

“Those two victories were very much needed after the two losses at A&M,” Bunge said. “What the coaches and I are trying to stress is that we’re playing well, and we need to continue to play well and not worry about the outcome.”

No KU player has been performing at a higher level than Serena Settlemier. The fifth-year senior already has slammed a school-record 15 home runs and has been the Jayhawks’ best pitcher with a 10-4 record and 1.44 earned-run average. Settlemier also leads the club in batting average (.337), runs (24) and RBIs (37).

Second baseman Jessica Moppin and shortstop Destiny Frankenstein, also seniors, are hitting .323 and .322 respectively, but no other Jayhawks are over the .300 plateau.

Even if the Jayhawks can’t play today, the forecast is more favorable for this weekend, when they’re scheduled to resume conference play against Oklahoma State. Game times are 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
