Fight over park name holding up child support provision

March 29, 2006

— A fight over what to name a new state park is holding up legislation aimed at getting deadbeat parents to pay child support.

Several House members are adamant in wanting to call the former campus of Menninger Clinic the Oregon Trail Kaw River State Park.

But Sen. Laura Kelly, D-Topeka, said that name is a promotional nightmare because it is too long, and the park actually doesn't touch the Oregon Trail.

Kelly said a more appropriate name would be Kaw River State Park.

Meanwhile, the impasse over the park's name is holding up consideration of the other part of the bill that would withhold hunting and fishing licenses from people who owe back child support.

Negotiators said they hope to reach a compromise Thursday.

Really Gootsie, if you're going to make fun of the poor guy your could at least do it right. The quotes should be around "our" not "son". [rolleyes]

Getting back on topic. I'd like to know what the response is when someone asks "Why are we naming the park Oregon Trail-anything when it has no connection to the Oregon Trail?" That should be enough to get the matter closed.

But yeah, the real probelm here is the fact two completely non-related issues are on one bill, obviously the naming of the park is a "rider" on the license issue but I see little political reason for it. It's just a stupid park, people!

Also, the headline seems a little sensationalist "child support provision" really pumps this up to be some "for the good of the children" legislation and it's not that big a deal. Someone not being able to hunt is hardly going to make him pay up thousands of dollars of child support they owe. I figured some fat-cat legislator wanted to name a park after his best friend when I first started reading this.

If this sort of stuff is really what the state leaders fret about it's no surprise we have problems with tax reform and school funding. Don't sweat the small stuff, people.
