Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 27, 1906: “Tom Sweeney, Democratic leader for this county, has succeeded in bringing the Second District convention here. The meeting is in August but the only problem is there are no party candidates for office, even across the state. The Democrats are talking about drafting some people to run, knowing they will have virtually no chance in the face of Kansas Republicanism. One Democratic leader said, ‘Nobody wants to run for anything.’ : It appears a lot of money and liquor changed hands during the recent election here but Charles Scott seems to have beaten Henry Allen for the district congress seat without any liquor or cash bribes. : Local police and sheriff officers are taking pistol practice regularly to make sure they can hit the things they shoot at. C.B. Kincaid, the North Lawrence day policeman, seems to be the top sharpshooter among the officers.”
