Huskers sweep Kansas

? The University of Nebraska’s No. 2-ranked baseball team scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-all tie and secure a 4-1 victory over Kansas University in the second game of a baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

The Huskers (17-2 overall, 2-0 Big 12 Conference) plated six runs in the first inning and won the opener, 9-2.

NU’s Bryce Nimmo reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second with one out in the seventh of Game Two. He raced to third on catcher Dylan Parzyk’s wild throw. Ryan Wehrle broke the tie with a single to score Nimmo, KU reliever Don Czyz replacing starter Ricky Fairchild.

Czyz retired a Husker, then allowed an RBI single to Brandon Buckman to give the Huskers a 3-1 advantage.

Fairchild (4-2) scattered seven hits and struck out three in 62â3 innings. Czyz allowed one run on three hits the rest of the way.

Kansas (16-10, 1-4) plated a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Gus Milner that followed a walk to Kyle Murphy, a single by Ritchie Price and walk to Jared Schweitzer.

Tony Watson (4-1) and Brett Jensen held KU to three hits and struck out 12 Jayhawks.

In the opener, Luke Gorsett slugged a first-inning grand slam off Sean Land (4-4). Land struck out a batter while walking two and allowing five earned runs.

Freshman Paul Smyth entered in the second with no outs and a runner on first. The Atascadero, Calif., native held the Huskers scoreless in the second and third innings before Nebraska plated single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Smyth finished the day with a career-high five innings of work, striking out two while allowing three earned runs.

KU’s first hit in Game One came on a fifth-inning homer by John Allman.

KU senior Kodiak Quick (3-2, 1.96 ERA) will face Nebraska sophomore Johnny Dorn (3-1, 3.33 ERA) in the series finale at 1:05 p.m. today.
