Compost giveaway completed

Gardeners have responded in force to Lawrence’s annual compost giveaway, depleting the supply this morning.

Last year, the city gave away 1,000 cubic yards of compost. This year, they had 700 cubic yards available. The reduced supply was due to less carryover, more use by city crews, and the detection of potentially harmful chemicals in some portions of the compost.

The compost giveaway was scheduled to last until Saturday, but this is no longer the case. The Waste Reduction and Recycling staff have stated that they appreciate the response of the community and look forward to the fall giveaway.
