Shoppers put on alert after purse snatchings

Two women have had their purses stolen from their shopping carts in recent days at local grocery stores, prompting Lawrence Police to remind shoppers to be on the alert.

Diana Dyal was buying groceries between 12:10 p.m. and 12:40 p.m. March 12 at Hy-Vee, 4000 W. Sixth St., when her purse disappeared.

“I had my purse and a couple other things in the cart and apparently turned my back without paying attention. That’s the only thing I can think of,” she said. “I have gone to Hy-Vee for so many years that it was one of those familiar, safe places. I didn’t even think about the fact that something could get stolen there.”

Dyal, who is physically disabled from post-polio syndrome, lost items including her bus pass, an inhaler and a handicapped placard for her vehicle.

A similar theft happened between 10:50 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday at Dillons, 3000 W. Sixth St. In that case, the 58-year-old victim’s purse was found behind the store. Items were missing, including $90.

“We want to make sure people are aware” that the crimes have been happening, said Kim Murphree, a Lawrence Police spokeswoman.

Anyone with information about the thefts can call the anonymous Crime Stoppers hot line at 843-TIPS. Callers may be eligible for a cash reward if the information leads to an arrest.
