Hitting the road with Fido

If you’re traveling with your pet, preparation can make the difference between a memorable vacation and a nightmare. A new Web site by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) offers the following tips for traveling with your animal companions:

¢ Be prepared. If your dog is up for a trip, pay a visit to the vet shortly before departure for a checkup and a certificate of health. These are required when entering foreign countries and certain states. Take food bowls, water, grooming items, an ID tag with your name and contact information, a retractable leash and harness, and a recent photo in case the dog becomes lost.

¢ Be safe. Restrain your dog by using a kennel or a canine seat restraint.

¢ Feed dogs and cats well in advance of the trip to prevent motion sickness, and never transport a dog in the bed of a pick-up truck

¢ Once you’re there, maintain the animal’s regular routine of feeding, walks and playtime. Know where vets are in the area in case of an emergency. If you plan to take dogs on a boat, be sure they’re wearing flotation devices at all times.

¢ If your animal companion stays home, kennels should be options of last resort. Your animal will fare much better under the full-time care of a relative or friend – preferably one who is willing to stay at your house with the animal – or a highly recommended and screened professional sitter.
