KJHK on hiatus as tower is removed

KJHK is off the air. For now.

The Kansas University-based student-run radio station signed off at 11 p.m. Sunday so KU could dismantle its storm-damaged radio tower.

The March 12 storm slammed a 10-by-30 foot section of roof from the adjacent Art and Design Building into the 82-year-old tower, damaging some supports beyond repair.

Since then, KJHK, which broadcasts on 90.7 FM, has been transmitting at half of its 2,900-watt power, and was knocked off the air completely for two days last week.

The tower will be dismantled Tuesday at an estimated cost of $25,000. Until a new antenna is moved to the Kansas Public Radio tower on west campus, the station will broadcast over the Internet starting March 27.
