The Journal-World reported that Gene A. Budig, the president of West Virginia University, would be named the 14th chancellor at Kansas University. Formal announcement was due at a press conference in Topeka the following day. Budig was a 41-year-old native of Nebraska and would begin his duties July 1. He would succeed Archie Dykes, who had resigned for a Topeka insurance job. Budig had degrees from Nebraska and had also served as president of Illinois State University. His KU salary was to be $75,700 plus benefits.
While a Cleveland developer considered its next move on a proposed southwest Lawrence shopping mall, four city commissioners contacted by the Journal-World called for immediate public discussion of the matter. The commissioners had voted 5-0 against rezoning property for Jacobs, Visconsi, Jacobs and said they had no current intention of calling for a public vote on the matter as JVJ had suggested. Some expected JVJ legal action.
