Lawrence Hidden Valley Camp for Girl Scouts is celebrating 50 years. The locally owned and managed urban wilderness camp was purchased in June 1956, in part by funds made available through the will of Alfred Bromelsick. The camp continues to receive funds annually from the Alfred Bromelsick Trust. Several projects are being planned to celebrate the milestone: a historical booklet highlighting the camp’s founders and development, an oral/video history project from interviews and old photographs, and a hikers guide to historical and memorial markers at the camp.

The first event to kick off the yearlong celebration is “Get Spiffy for the Fifty” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 30. In addition to camp maintenance projects, scouts will attempt to unearth several time capsules, including one dating back to the first day camp held in 1957.

Other events include an appreciation dinner for former Hidden Valley Board members and volunteers on Sept. 7 and the 50th birthday bash on Sept. 23, featuring a progressive dinner, displays and activities for all ages as guests roam through the camp.

The organization is seeking individuals with memories and memorabilia to share. For more information or to share memories, contact Cindy Riling, the 50th committee chairwoman, at 843-3285 or 393-7931 or by e-mail at criling@douglas-county.com.
