4-H and FCE news

¢ Vinland Valley 4-H Club met March 6 at the Vinland Methodist Church. The meeting was called to order by Spencer Wilson, president. Members answered roll call by naming who they thought would win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Kelly Baker read a thank-you note from the Salvation Army. Lacey Vesecky and Bryson Clarke were guests at the meeting.

Sandy Stone and Cheryl Hunsinger gave the leader’s report. Members were asked to volunteer to work at a concession stand at a rabbit show and to donate pies and make chili. The club was reminded that 4-H camp forms are due in the Extension office by April 3.

Amanda Miller, Brittnay George and Sara Shields gave a Level 1 and 2 food talk on kitchen utensils. Casey George talked about Slice of Agriculture. Amy Stone discussed the workshop she attended for Shooting Sports. Dalton Vesecky gave a project talk about the space shuttle and history of the space program.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 3 at the church. The program will be given by members enrolled in the electricity and food levels 3 and 4 projects. Host families will be the Mocks and Millers.

¢ Vinland Family and Community Education unit will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Vinland Methodist Church. Paula Johnson will give the lesson “End of Life Decision Making.” Virginia Pfantz will be the hostess.

¢ The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met March 7 in Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Myrna Hartford, president, announced that Donna Kuhlman was appointed to a three-year term on the program committee and that the northeast area meeting will be April 6 in Manhattan.

Lola Ford and Aliene Bieber volunteered to work the extension booth at the Baldwin Community Wellness Festival.

Susan Krumm, Extension agent, reported on the “Walk Kansas Program,” which will be March 11-April 5. Krumm asked for volunteers to work in the Extension booth at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital health fair. She also requested that donations be made to the FNP grant program from the FCE Units.

Darlene Bright, American Red Cross cookie chairwoman, announced the next Red Cross blood drive will be April 24 at First Christian Church. Kanwaka and Vinland FCE units will each furnish five dozen cookies.

Lola Ford announced the Spring Achievement Tea will be at 1 p.m. April 19 in Building 21 North at the fairgrounds.

Rachel Purvis announced the FCE-sponsored tour will be Oct. 10, 11 and 12. The trip will include Springfield, Ill., and Hannibal, Mo. The FCE Council voted to give members 25-, 30-, and 40-year certificates at the Spring Tea.

The next FCE Council meeting will be at 9 a.m. April 11 in the Deal Six Auditorium.
