Spirited play marks last game of season

Fun was the name of the game Saturday at Holcom Park Center. The Rattlensnakes and Firehawks played their final Futsal game and official Ray Chao made sure everyone left the court with a smile.

In a rare move, Chao invited every player from each team on to the court for the final quarter while performed triple-duty as official and goalkeeper for both teams. Needless to say, a few more goals found their way into the net, brightening the season for some players who normally didn’t get many scoring opportunities.

“I just wanted to make sure they all had fun and hopefully this makes them want to keep playing soccer,” Chao said.

At least one player plans to fulfill Chao’s wish. Rattlesnake forward Brett Carver said she planned to continue playing the sport and looked forward to competing outside in the spring. The Firehawks’ Alexis Boyd echoed Carver’s plans, but added that she might be playing other sports as well.

Firehawk forward Alexis Boyd aims for the net during the second half. Boyd and the Firehawks battled the Rattlesnakes for the final Futsal game of the season.

The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie at halftime and played an even third quarter until Chao changed the game in the final period. Carver led the offensive charge for the Rattlesnakes, scoring two goals in the half and actively pursuing the ball on every play. Carver, whose favorite part of soccer is scoring goals, was aided by Kristin Spencer and Abby Hale on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball.

Boyd led the Firehawk charge, which ultimately came to a standstill in the final moments as everyone tried to get their foot on the ball. Boyd scored late in the game, but was immediately answered by Carver’s score. Surprisingly, scoring wasn’t Boyd’s favorite part of the game.

“I really enjoy passing the ball to a teammate when they’re open,” Boyd said.

Each team took advantage of the final minutes to get a few goals in the open net, which led to a 5-5 tie at the final whistle. What mattered though, was that more players had a chance to make an impact on the game, and everyone had fun.

“Mostly I enjoyed running around and having fun with my friends,” Rattlesnake Abby Hale said.

As shown by the score, there were no true winners or losers in the game. However, everyone who participated won something for themselves. Whether it was a post season award, a goal scored in the final game or maybe just a slice of post game pizza, everyone took home something.
