Old home town – 100 years ago today
From the Lawrence Daily World for March 15, 1906: “Baseball is not far off and the voice of the umpire will soon be heard in the land. It is proposed that baseball be played on Sundays in Lawrence this year. We do not believe the town will stand for such desecration. Baseball is a fine sport, but it should be played on weekdays. : The only wonder about the peach buds is that the old annual story about their being ruined by the spring freezes never seems to get stale – while the peach crops thrive. : The university’s Prof. Cady spoke in chapel yesterday on ‘Facts and Theories of Science.’ : There is increasing attendance for ‘ladies days’ at the new YMCA and it appears many more will enroll for such activities as swimming and gym work. :The Fraternal Order of Eagles has decided to build a new club headquarters on the corner of New Hampshire and Warren. The order is growing in Lawrence and needs a new site.”
