Eagles battle back to end season with win

The Kindergarten Jayhawks and Eagles Futsal soccer teams took to the court at Holcom Park Center on Saturday to close out their season with a fun and spirited game. After falling behind to the Jayhawks in the first half, the Eagles battled back in the second for the 5-3 victory.

The last few minutes of the game was reserved for pure fun and enjoyment, though. During the last quarter, both teams’ coaches took to the goalie post as all team members ran the court in an all-out free-for-all. The role reversal gave the players a chance to try and sneak one past their coaches.

Eagles head coach Jeremy Huls said the switch-around in the last part of the game was an effort to close out the season in giving every single player the chance to hit the court to try and score.

“It was something fun the referee decided to give the kids at the end of the game,” Huls said.

The players didn’t seem like they needed the last few minutes to have fun though, as they played with heart and energy throughout the entire game.

The Jayhawks got the game started off strong with a goal the whole team worked to get through to the net. The team shot back minutes later with two more goals. Jayhawk scoring powerhouse Matthew Howard added another goal before time was up in the first half, which would be the final goal in the period. The team scored a total of three goals in the first half.

Eagle Adonis Stanwix uses the wall to push the ball back out on the court at Holcom Park Center. Stanwix scored a goal in the second half of Saturday's game after breaking through a stingy Jayhawk defense.

The Eagles also found the back of the net and tallied two of their own goals before halftime. Jacob Mills deflected any attempt on the Jayhawks part to score when he was in the goalie position for the Eagles.

Though behind by a goal entering the second half, the Eagles found their footing and shot back in hopes of getting a final victory on the season.

After the team scored the first goal of the half, Adonis Stanwix busted forth with another goal. Spencer Manning found the net for the fourth goal for the Eagles. Manning snuck a fifth goal past the Jayhawks’ coach in the last quarter during the switch around, to give the Eagles five goals in the game

With time winding down in the last game of the season and the Eagles’ victory in the bag Huls said he noticed the transformation his players made since the season began.

“This was our last game and you can see how much the kids have improved,” Huls said. “Kids who were once very shy in the game are now running around and talking with other players.”

Huls said the final game was rewarding after watching his team work on fundamental soccer rules and building teamwork all season.
