While some colleges and universities in America had been shifting away from the more traditional curricula over the years, Kansas University appeared to have done a much better job of sticking with "the basics," and as a result provided a much better education than the majority of schools, a study indicated. Jerry Hutchison, acting vice chancellor for academic affairs, said KU had always required certain courses to give students a broad educational background upon graduation and that such a policy would continue.

The Kansas Board of Regents told the Journal-World it was looking to a March 20 target date to announce its choice for a new Kansas University chancellor. Del Shankel had been acting chancellor since Archie Dykes had resigned the past summer to take a Topeka insurance executive job.
