Schilling, Martinez on the way back

Red Sox ace Curt Schilling and Mets standout Pedro Martinez both had encouraging showings Saturday as they work their way back from injuries.

Martinez threw 81 pitches off a mound during a bullpen session and walked away encouraged about the health of his right big toe, which has hampered him since last season.

“It felt pretty good,” Martinez said. “The results are great. I didn’t throw too many at once. It’s not time yet. It’s just time to work.”

The three-time Cy Young Award winner took three breaks during the session in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in what he said was an attempt to better simulate an actual game. He threw 62 pitches off a mound Wednesday, had a long-toss session Thursday and took Friday off.

“I really have to work to get used to the mound and throw pitches around the plate,” Martinez said.

Schilling pitched three perfect innings before beaning Chris Duffy to start the fourth in a 10-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, Fla.

Duffy left the game and was taken to a hospital, where tests showed he had a mild concussion.

In Schilling’s first outing of the spring against major-league hitters, he gave up four runs in the fourth inning, squandering a 4-0 lead. In all, Schilling allowed four hits in four innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

“I felt good,” said Schilling, who returned from ankle surgery in 2004 to help the Red Sox win their first World Series title in 86 years. “I know I gave up four runs, but I feel like I did some good things.”
