Temperatures heading up to 60s

Thundertorms possible Sunday

Winter was still lingering around this morning, as temperatures dipped below freezing. But more springlike weather is moving in later today

“It’s kind of a chilly start, but temperatures will quickly climb,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “I think we’ll see our temperatures soar into the mid 60s today.”

While the low started out at 30 degrees at 6:15 a.m., the temperature at noon at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 56 degrees, the humidity was 51 percent, winds were from the southeast at 22 mph. The average low temperature for this date is 33 degrees. The record low was 3 degrees, set in 1948.

South winds will pick up today, coming in between 10 to 18 mph today, Schack said. Skies will be partly cloudy, but temperatures will climb to a high of 65 degrees, she said. The average high temperature for this date is 55 degrees. The record high was 87 degrees set in 1894.

Saturday will be sunny with mostly mild conditions. Saturday’s morning low temperature will be 45 degrees and climb to 71 degrees on Saturday afternoon.

A cold front moves in on Saturday afternoon, bringing the chance for thunderstorms on Sunday, Schack said. Sunday’s morning low will be 49 degrees and climb to a high of 64 degrees by Sunday afternoon, she said.
