Baylor’s Young sets mark in win

? Sophia Young became the Big 12 Conference’s all-time leading scorer and nearly set a tournament single-game scoring record.

Personal accomplishments are nice, but her team’s win over Kansas State was better.

Young scored 35, including six in a row in overtime, to send No. 10 Baylor to a 79-74 victory Wednesday night in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals.

“I’m truly blessed,” Young said. “It’s an honor. I just go out there and have fun. I enjoy playing basketball.”

Young took 32 shots, and she was quick to point out that 18 of them didn’t go in.

“That’s the most I’ve ever taken,” she said. “I missed a lot of them.”

Young reached the career scoring mark early in the first half to surpass Kansas State’s Kendra Wecker, who had 2,333 points from 2002-05.

Baylor forward Sophia Young (33) drives to the basket past K-State center JoAnn Hamlin. BU won, 79-74, Wednesday in Dallas.

Young added 12 rebounds and fell one point short of matching the tournament single-game scoring record set earlier in the day by Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris.

“I’m happy for her,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson said. “We saw a special player the last four years.”
