Areas east of Lawrence under tornado watch

Chance for passing showers on Thursday

Areas just east of Lawrence are remaining under a tornado watch through early evening, said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

“They canceled it for Douglas County,” Sayers said.

The watch area, which runs through 8 p.m., covers much of eastern Kansas, including Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson counties, Sayers said. Douglas County was in the watch area briefly, Sayers said.

Sayers said Lawrence isn’t expected to get any severe weather.

“We aren’t going to see anything tonight,” he said.

Thursday will bring cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, he said.

“Tomorrow, you might see a passing shower around the midday,” Sayers said.

At 4:20 p.m. the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 77 degrees, the humidity was 32 percent and winds were from the southwest at 22 mph, gusting to 35 mph. Skies were partly cloudy.

The overnight low dropped to 56 degrees from about 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. The average low temperature for this date is 32 degrees. The record low was 2 degrees, set in 1967.

The average high temperature for today is 54 degrees. The record high temperature was 80 degrees, set in 1974.

Sayers said Thursday’s morning low temperature will be 43 degrees.

Thursday’s high temperature will be 49 degrees, with a passing shower possible, he said.

Friday’s morning low will be 34 degrees. Friday’s high will be 63 degrees, with mostly sunny conditions, Sayers said.
