Blue’s practice proves true in win over White

Unselfish offense, solid defense demonstrated in back-and-forth match

The young Rec girls’ White and Blue Futsal teams used Saturday to increase their playing skills.

By the game’s end the Blue team’s techniques led to a 4-2 victory.

Blue team head coaches Kevin Burenheide and Brian Blagg said their team has been pounding the court hard to improve its performance.

“They did a terrific job today and they all played really hard,” Blagg said.

The Blue team’s first quarter goalie, Brianna Burenheide , stopped numerous White shot attempts in the first few minutes.

After the defensive stops, Morgan Mays set up Blue’s first goal when she kicked a swift pass to teammate Savannah Fergux, who drove the ball into the back of the net for the game’s first goal.

Blue rocketed in another goal minutes later to finish out the first half with a 2-0 lead.

The White team showed some defensive prowess of its own when goalie Elaine Harris had multiple stuffs.

On offense the team hustled up and down the court, but White’s multiple scoring attempts fell short in the first half.

Amber Jameson pushes the ball up the court during the second half. Jameson's team fell 4-2 to the Blue team Saturday morning at Holcom Park Center.

Fergux said her team has really been making an effort to perfect its scoring abilities during recent practices.

“We have practiced scoring a lot of goals,” Fergux said.

Though Fergux and her teammates held down the White team in the first, White came back in the second half to tally two goals of its own to tie the contest.

White midfielders made timely passes to the forwards, who easily found themselves in scoring position on both goals.

The Blue team would not go quietly though.

Kelty Blagg shined in the second half. Her first shot on goal resulted in a score. Then Blagg mixed it up on defense, rotating to the goalie position to squelch several White shots.

In one maneuver Blagg captured the White ball inches before it slapped against the net.

Brianna Burenheide proved herself valuable once again as she stole away a White possession and scored on the other end to give Blue its final margin of victory.

Kevin Burenheide said the victory was rewarding because his team was able to see results from all the skills Blue has been practicing.

“We have been working on teamwork and passing in practice,” he said. “We are trying to make sure everyone gets a chance to touch the ball.”
