Pull out your umbrella. Showers and thunderstorms are in Lawrence’s forecast this afternoon, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We could see a few strong storms. The best chance will be in the late afternoon and evening,” Schack said.

At noon, the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 55 degrees, the humidity was 51 percent and winds were from the southeast at 21 mph, gusting to 31 mph.

This morning’s low temperature was 37 degrees at 6 a.m. The average low temperature for this date is 32 degrees. The record low was minus 3 degrees in 1943.

The average high for this date is 53 degrees. The record high was 80 degrees, set in 1974.

Today’s high will climb to 61 degrees, Schack said. She said the chance for precipitation was above 50 percent after the noon hour. Winds will be from the south at 15-25 mph today.

“We are expecting a few thunderstorms this afternoon,” she said. “We could see a few strong thunderstorm later tonight and into tomorrow.”

She said Lawrence has a slight risk of severe weather. The main threat from the storms would be from hail and heavy rain, she said.

“It’s a stormy pattern starting this afternoon and lasting through Wednesday night,” Schack said.

Wednesday’s morning low temperature will be 48 degrees, with Wednesday’s high reaching 65 degrees, she said. Winds will be from the south at 15 to 25 mph, she said.

Thursday will bring a chance for continued showers, then cloudy skies, Schack said. Thurday’s morning low will be 37 degrees, with the high temperature reaching 56 degrees.
