Puckett hospitalized after stroke

Kirby Puckett’s stroke left the Minnesota Twins shaken.

“We all put things in perspective here,” manager Ron Gardenhire said, nearly breaking down. “That pretty much takes away from anything you do at the ballpark. Our hearts and our prayers are all with Puck. We know it’s a tough situation out there.”

The Hall of Fame outfielder had a stroke at his Arizona home Sunday and was taken to a Scottsdale hospital for surgery, the Twins announced from their spring training camp in Fort Myers, Fla. The 44-year-old Puckett led Minnesota to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.

“The doctors said that if he has good luck, he’ll be all right. You have to keep the faith,” former Twins manager Tom Kelly said.

In Scottsdale, Roger Clemens struck out three in two scoreless innings and Chase Utley went 5-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs in Team USA’s debut – a 12-7 exhibition victory over a San Francisco Giants split squad.

In Peoria, Ariz., the Seattle Mariners learned starting pitcher Gil Meche has a strained oblique muscle on his left side.

At Jupiter, Fla., second baseman Pokey Reese’s contract was terminated by the Florida Marlins, who said they were disappointed not to receive an explanation regarding his abrupt departure from spring training.
