Brown says his health will allow him to coach

? Larry Brown revealed his ongoing medical problems were not debilitating enough to keep him from coaching the Knicks.

After it was reported that Brown had entered a Memphis hospital Tuesday after complaining of chest pains, the Knicks’ head coach said he still intended to address his bladder condition after the season but that he had every intention of honoring his contract.

“It’s not something I enjoy, but it’s not going to affect whether I can coach or not,” Brown said. “It’s not going to make me walk away from doing this. But I’m hopeful maybe we can resolve this so I can change my lifestyle a little bit. But there is nothing that I have that can keep me doing from what I want to do.”

Brown, 65, missed 17 games last season after needing hip surgery in November 2004 and four months later needing surgery for a bladder problem. Brown’s health was a major factor in the Detroit Pistons’ decision to sever ties with the Hall of Fame coach in July. In December, Brown said he might need additional surgery after the season.

“When I left the Mayo (Clinic) last year they told me that if things didn’t change I needed to go a different route,” Brown said. “I’ve met with people during the season, and nobody knows exactly what they want to do.

“The plan is as soon as the season is over to aggressively figure out how to deal with my situation. If they can’t, I’m OK. I’ve learned to deal with this.”

Brown said his chest pains were unrelated to his bladder condition. Brown began experiencing discomfort on the Knicks’ charter flight late Monday from San Antonio to Memphis, Tenn.

Dr. Lisa Callahan, the Knicks’ director of player care, arranged for Brown to meet with specialists Tuesday afternoon in Memphis. Brown admitted that he was “a little nervous” after being told to enter a hospital, where he had an EKG and blood work done. He was released two hours later and was told that the pain may have been the result of indigestion.

“I have chest pains after every bad game,” Brown joked. “Nothing has changed. I feel bad when we lose, and this has been a year when we’ve lost a lot so it’s not something that’s fun.”
