Police department rotates assignments

Lawrence Police Chief Ron Olin rotated his command staff this week, giving new assignments to all but one of his six captains.

Capt. David Cobb, formerly head of LPD’s information services division – which includes evidence, media relations, crime analysis, records and animal control – has been assigned to the community services division to oversee training and special projects. The former community services supervisor, Capt. Kevin Harmon, has been assigned to Cobb’s former position.

Also, Olin rotated assignments for the three patrol-shift captains. Capt. Ed Brunt has moved from the day shift to the midnight shift, Capt. Ray Urbanek has moved from the midnight shift to the evening shift and Capt. Steve Zarnowiec has moved from the evening shift to the day shift.

Olin said the changes have been planned for about a year and were made for a combination of reasons. For example, Zarnowiec was needed to attend meetings during the day for a project to reprogram the department’s radios.

Capt. Dan Affalter remains supervisor of the investigations division.
