Huge day for Jayhawks

Humphreys unhittable; Settlemier's bat big

? Kansas University’s softball squad bounced back from a three-game losing streak for two victories Friday at the first day of the Best Western Airport Festival, beating Stephen F. Austin, 5-0, and Northern Iowa, 15-2.

In the opener against SFA, junior Kassie Humphreys (4-5) struck out 13 while no-hitting the Ladyjacks. She contributed from the plate, too, with a home run, double and two RBIs.

Seniors Serena Settlemier and Destiny Frankenstein also homered in the opener.

In KU’s nightcap (or daycap – both games started before noon), the Jayhawks went off for 13 hits in the 15-run shellacking of UNI.

Settlemier (3-3) struck out six and allowed five hits in the victory, but her biggest contribution came as a batter. Settlemier homered twice, including a grand slam, and had seven RBIs. Val Chapple and Frankenstein also homered for KU.

Settlemier upped her KU record home-run total to 30, and Frankenstein has 29.

In tourney play today, KU will play No. 18 Nebraska at 1 p.m. and Notre Dame at 7 p.m.
