Woman accused of helping escapee returned to Kansas

Toby Young, the woman accused of aiding the escape of a convicted murderer from Lansing prison, has been returned to Kansas and made an appearance in Leavenworth County District Court this morning.

Young, 48, who was captured in Tennessee with escaped killer John Manard, 27, after two weeks on the run, is scheduled to return to court tomorrow for a bond hearing. Meanwhile, she is being held at the Leavenworth County jail, officials said.

Manard also is being transported back to the Lansing Correctional Facility, said Bill Miskell, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Corrections. Miskell said he would have more information to release this afternoon.

Young ran a dog rehabilitation program at the prison and is accused of smuggling Manard out of prison in a dog crate in the back of a van.
