Baldwin ? The Baldwin High boys basketball team used a big first-half run to overcome Iola’s hot start and secure a 70-52 victory in the opening round of the Class 4A sub-state tournament on the Bulldogs’ home floor.

The 15-2 run gave Baldwin (15-6) a seven-point lead at the half, and the Bulldogs continued to extend that margin after the break.

Aaron Hannon led Baldwin with 16 points. Jeremy Wright (14), Ryan Jorgensen (12) and Blake Wieden (11) also added double-digit scoring.

The Bulldogs (15-6) will play host to Santa Fe Trail on Friday in the sub-state semifinals.

Santa Fe Trail 56, Anderson County 45

Carbondale – The Chargers relied on their rebounding and the scoring duo of Shawn Conklin and Jake Carter to advance in the sub-state playoffs.

Conklin had a game-high 17 points, while Carter added 15. No other Santa Fe Trail player scored more than five.

The Chargers (10-11) also stepped up their defensive pressure in the third quarter, allowing just four points to create some breathing room.

Oskaloosa 52, Wellsville 41

Oskaloosa – The Bears capitalized on the turnover-prone Eagles to win at home and advance in the Class 3A sub-state.

Wellsville (4-17) knocked in three outside shots but struggled otherwise to penetrate the Oskaloosa zone defense.

Megan Reed paced the Bears with 22 points. Teammate Taylor King added 13 to go with eight rebounds.

Erica Patton scored 20 for the Eagles in the loss.

Oskaloosa (13-9) will play host to the Effingham on Friday.
