Aquahawks: Greater Southwest Invite meet journal

Friday February 3

Today was our first day of swimming at the Greater Southwest Invitational meet in Plano, Texas. Yesterday we were on a big charter bus for about 8 hours with some of our teammates. We kept ourselves busy buy playing games, cards, talking, and eating. Today, we all swam in the morning session (prelims) and did well. Reilly and Emma both made finals too! After our prelims swims, we went back to the hotel to rest and eat. When it was time to go back to the pool, the people who weren’t swimming dressed up as pirates to cheer us on! The Aquahawks are competeing with the other teams for the meet’s annual SPIRIT AWARD! So, to win the year we chose to be pirates with bug signs, shakers, and bandanas. When all of our finals swims were over, we headed back to the hotel for dinner and sleep. We are all so tired so we’ll write back tomorrow!

Saturday February 4

We had to wake up at 6 a.m. this morning to go warm up for prelims. When warm-ups were over, we got back on the bus to go eat breakfast. Then guess what?!?!? Back to the pool AGAIN! We swam our prelim events and today Emma made it back to finals. So then we all hauled back up to the hotel for lunch and a nap. Then at 4:30, we headed back to the pool to swim and cheer some more! Now you can really see how busy just one weekend can be for us. When we were all done we came back to the hotel, had pizza, packed and now we’re getting ready for bed. We swim prelims then leave tomorrow so we’ll write our last entry on the bus!

Sunday February 5

Today, after we woke up, we got all our stuff together and loaded it onto the bus. We then had breakfast and said goodbye to the hotel, then headed on over to the pool. Unfortunately, we all only got to swim in prelims (but did well) because once all the swims were done, we got onto the bus for the last time this weekend to drive back to Lawrence. We are all so tired from our HUGE weekend and we’ll probably watch some movies on the bus’ TVs when it gets dark. The Aquahawks are very sad to say that we didn’t win the spirit award. We cheered our hardest and showed our spirit but the Kansas City Blazers managed to nab the trophy from us. Oh well, we’ll get it next year! This weekend has been amazing and we’re sad that all this fun has ended so soon.
