Another afternoon in the 70s ahead

Cold front moving in Thursday, with rain possible Friday night, Saturday

The late winter heat wave is continuing – Lawrence will have more 70-degree temperature readings this afternoon.

“It looks like another warm day today,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

But you should enjoy it while it lasts, Schack said. A cold front is moving in later today, bringing clouds and cooler temperatures on Thursday, she said.

At 12:10 p.m., the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 71degrees, the humidity was 55 percent and winds were from the southeast at 5 mph.

This morning’s low temperature was 57 degrees. The average low for this date is 30 degrees. The record low is 1 degree, set in 1962.

Lawrence set a new record high on Tuesday, reaching 80 degrees. The record high for today’s date was 79 degrees, set in 1992. The average high temperature for today is 60 degrees. Schack is predicting that today’s high will reach 77 degrees.

Winds will start out from the south at 10 to 15 mph, then shift around to the northwest this afternoon, she said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 36 degrees by Thursday morning, she said. As the cold front brings in cooler temperatures, Thursday’s high will climb to 59 degrees and skies will be mostly sunny, she said.

Friday’s morning low will be 30 degrees, with Friday’s high temperature reaching 54 degrees, Schack said. The National Weather Service says the chance for precipitation on Friday night is 40 percent.

Thunderstorms are also possible on Saturday, Schack said.
