Old home town – 40 years ago today

Thirty-five young bicyclists, the Wandering Wheels, stopped through here on a trip from the West Coast to the east. Leading them was Bob Davenport, a former UCLA football star who had grown up in Topeka.

Local boys were putting the finishing touches on their Soap Box Derby racers for the July 4 race down Mississippi Street. The local winner was to advance to the national finals in Akron, Ohio.

A special stockholders meeting at Lawrence Country Club was to consider a $500,000 remodeling and renovation project. Dale Maxwell was chairman of the planning committee.
