Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 29, 1906: “The police drag net failed to catch a single drunk last night, consequently the police court docket was empty today. However, in county court, Jake Washington was found not guilty when it was learned he had not been violating any fishing laws as wardens had charged. It turns out the wardens were not properly familiar with the rules and it is a bad reflection on them that they took Washington to court and then were so poorly prepared. : The expected draft of W.R. Stubbs for the U.S. Senate race appears to have been only a zephyr with no action taken in that direction in Emporia. : Colombia and some other South American republics have begun planning a rival canal across the Isthmus of Panama. America seems bent on a lock canal and the others are not likely to be able to compete with our nation’s efforts.”
