Hot this afternoon, storm possible

City gets off to record cool start

This morning’s cool start was one for the record books.

But this afternoon’s temperatures will be climbing into the 90s, with the possibility of a stray thunderstorm, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We have an unseasonably cool start for this morning, with a lot of clear skies around the region,” Schack said. “Earlier this morning we bottomed out at 56 degrees.”

That broke the old morning low temperature record for this date of 57 degrees, set in 1985, she said.

The average low temperature for this date is 68 degrees, she said.

At 7:30 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 60 degrees, the humidity was 90 percent and winds were calm.

Shack said the temperature will reach 85 degrees by noon and 91 degrees by late this afternoon.

The average high temperature for this date is 88 degrees. The record high was 107 degrees, set in 1980.

Clouds will be partly cloudy and scattered through the afternoon, she said. Winds will be from the southwest at 7-15 mph.

“It will take until this afternoon and evening to spark off a few thunderstorms,” she said. “We have a chance for a stray storm.”

However, most of the storms will be to the east of the Lawrence area, she said.

Overnight, Lawrence’s temperature will fall to 61 degrees, she said.

Thursday’s high will climb to 93 degrees, Schack said.

Friday’s morning low will fall to 63 degrees, with Friday’s high reaching 95, she said.

“Get used to the 90s,” she said. “They’ll stick around through the weekend.”
