From the Lawrence Daily World of June 24, 1906: “A large party of Lawrence people including a number of old soldiers went to Ottawa this morning to attend the Chautauqua. The governor will also be there tonight. : The commencement exercises at Haskell Institute will begin tomorrow with a baccalaureate address. : Lillian Becker, 19, was killed this morning by a Santa Fe passenger train. The accident occurred between the paper mill and the egg-case filler factory in the old wire-mill building. She was near or on the tracks and apparently did not hear the train approaching. : DeWit Deming sends news of a huge flood in Visalia, Calif., which ruined thousands of acres of fruit orchard property he owns. He says he plans to try to start over.”
