From the Lawrence Daily World of June 23, 1906: “It appears our own W.R. Stubbs, long a noted political leader, will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in the next few weeks. He is regarded as an outstanding prospect. Stubbs has secured perpetual leases on a large acreage of land near here that will help supply gas to Kansas City. There recently was a great gusher at the site.”
