Lavern Squier, president and chief executive officer of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, received the Silver Stirrup Award during the 34th annual Kansas Cavalry Encampment this month in Wichita.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius presented the award to Squier, who was recognized for leadership and service in economic development for Kansas. The award is named in honor of Samuel J. Crawford, the state’s third governor.

Squier is known for his positive attitude, integrity and ability to get things done, said Steve Kelly, director of business development for the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The Kansas Cavalry is an organization of volunteer business, education and economic development professionals who recruit businesses to Kansas in collaboration with the Kansas Department of Commerce.
