Thunderstorms expected today

Weekend forecast calls for temperatures in 80s

Lawrence didn’t get much more than some wet pavement overnight. But there’s another chance for thunderstorms today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

The National Weather Service says showers are moving northeast across the Lawrence area this morning, possibly bringing periods of heavy rainfall.

At 9:21 a.m., downtown Lawrence was getting some rain. Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 72 degrees, the humidity was 79 percent and winds were calm. The average low temperature for this date is 66 degrees. The record low was 50 degrees, set in 1902.

More thunderstorms, which could bring strong straight-line winds and hail, are expected this afternoon south of Interstate 70, Schack said.

“We will have periods of rain this afternoon, hopefully periods of locally heavy rain,” she said.

Today’s temperature will stay cooler than average, climbing to a high of 82 degrees today, she said. The average high temperature for this date is 87 degrees. The record high was 100 degrees, set in 1933.

Overnight, weather radar indicated that northern Douglas County got less than a 10th of an inch of rain and southern Douglas County in the Globe area picked up a few 10ths of an inch, Schack said. In contrast, a strong thunderstorm lingered over an area in northern Franklin County overnight, giving it 4 inches of rain, she said.

Schack said Friday will be cloudy, with the morning low temperature starting at 66 degrees. Friday’s afternoon high temperature will be 85 degrees, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 64 degrees. Saturday’s afternoon high temperature will be 86, with partly cloudy skies, she said.
